Al-Qayyum (The Sustainer)

Reflection:

Al-Qayyūm (ٱلْقَيُّوم) means the One who sustains, upholds, and manages all things continuously without fatigue or need. Derived from qāma — to stand or maintain — it denotes Allah’s self-sufficiency and perfect governance. Everything in creation depends on Him for existence, guidance, and sustenance, while He depends on nothing. To believe in Al-Qayyum is to recognize that every breath, heartbeat, and movement of the cosmos endures only through His will. It invites the believer to release illusionary control and find serenity in knowing that Allah alone maintains all order — within the universe and within the soul.

Qur’anic References:

  1. Al-Baqarah 2:255 (Ayat al-Kursi) – “Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence.” — He neither slumbers nor sleeps, maintaining creation perfectly at every moment.
  2. Al-Imran 3:2–3 – “Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer. He has revealed to you the Book in truth.” — His sustaining extends to revelation, ensuring guidance as He sustains life.
  3. Ta-Ha 20:111 – “Faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer; and he who carries injustice will have failed.” — all creation submits to His sustaining power and perfect justice.

Notes:

  • Al-Qayyum appears three times, each alongside Al-Hayy (The Ever-Living) — together expressing eternal life and perpetual sustenance.
  • Al-Baqarah (2:255) encapsulates Al-Qayyum’s majesty: Allah upholds existence without effort, never distracted, never fatigued.
  • Classical scholars describe Al-Qayyum as “He who stands by Himself and sustains all others,” signifying independence, preservation, and guardianship.
  • His qayyumiyyah extends to both creation and command — He sustains bodies by provision and hearts by revelation.
  • To internalize Al-Qayyum is to cultivate dependence without despair — relying upon Allah’s constant care, knowing that every rise and fall is held by the One who never falters.
