Al-Muntaqim (The Avenger)

Reflection:

Al-Muntaqim (ٱلْمُنتَقِم) means the One who justly takes retribution against the oppressors and wrongdoers. It comes from intiqām, meaning to exact justice with precision and fairness, never out of wrath or vengeance for its own sake. Allah’s vengeance is not impulsive — it is measured, deserved, and purposeful, ensuring that truth prevails and injustice is never left unanswered. To believe in Al-Muntaqim is to find both warning and reassurance: wrongdoing will never go unaccounted for, and those wronged are defended by divine justice that never forgets.

Qur’anic References:

  1. Al-Imran 3:4 – “Those who disbelieve in the signs of Allah — for them is a severe punishment, and Allah is Mighty, capable of retribution (Al-Muntaqim).”
  2. Ibrahim 14:47 – “So never think that Allah will fail in His promise to His messengers. Indeed, Allah is Mighty, Owner of retribution.” — affirming divine justice in upholding truth.
  3. Az-Zumar 39:37 – “And whoever Allah guides — for him there is no misleader. Is not Allah Exalted in Might, Owner of retribution?” — His vengeance ensures the triumph of righteousness.

Notes:

  • Al-Muntaqim appears three times, often alongside Al-‘Aziz (The Mighty), emphasizing that His retribution stems from strength balanced by wisdom and justice.
  • Al-Imran (3:4) and Ibrahim (14:47) connect His vengeance directly to defense of truth and His messengers, not personal anger.
  • Classical scholars clarify that Al-Muntaqim acts only when mercy and warning have been rejected, making His retribution a form of ultimate justice.
  • Belief in Al-Muntaqim inspires accountability and moral restraint, reminding that no deed escapes divine justice — yet it also comforts the oppressed, for Allah alone avenges wrongs without excess or neglect.
  • To internalize this Name is to uphold justice without cruelty, balancing firmness with mercy, and trusting Allah to right every wrong in His perfect timing.
