Names of Allah
Al-Hayy (The Ever-Living)
Reflection:
Al-Ḥayy (ٱلْحَيّ) means the Ever-Living One whose existence is perfect, eternal, and self-sustaining. His life is not like that of creation — it has no beginning, end, or weakness. Every living thing depends on Him, while He depends on none. Al-Hayy represents vitality, awareness, and presence — the source of all life and consciousness. To know Al-Hayy is to understand that every heartbeat, breath, and moment of being flows from His will. This awareness invites the believer to rely fully on the One who never dies, never sleeps, and never ceases to care.
Qur’anic References:
- Al-Baqarah 2:255 (Ayat al-Kursi) – “Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence.” — His life is the foundation of all creation’s order and endurance.
- Al-Imran 3:2 – “Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all.” — absolute affirmation of divine singularity and self-sufficiency.
- Ta-Ha 20:111 – “Faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting.” — all creation bows before His eternal majesty.
- Al-Furqan 25:58 – “And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die, and exalt His praise.” — guidance to place full trust in His unending existence.
- Ghafir 40:65 – “He is the Ever-Living; there is no deity except Him. So call upon Him, devoting religion purely to Him.”
Notes:
- Al-Hayy appears about five times, often paired with Al-Qayyum (The Sustainer), forming a divine pair that expresses self-existence and perfect control.
- Al-Baqarah (2:255) and Al-Imran (3:2) declare His eternal life as the basis of tawhid — He alone is the living source upon which all depend.
- Al-Furqan (25:58) invites believers to trust the Living One beyond temporal attachments, for every created life fades but His remains.
- Classical scholars describe Al-Hayy as the attribute that encompasses all others, for His knowledge, mercy, and power flow from His perfect, unending life.
- To embody the awareness of Al-Hayy is to live with spiritual vitality, anchoring the heart in the eternal while navigating the fleeting — trusting the One who never ceases to exist or to sustain.
