Names of Allah
Al-Wadud (The Loving)
Reflection:
Al-Wadūd (ٱلْوَدُود) means the Most Loving, the Affectionate One whose love is pure, constant, and unconditional. Unlike human affection, divine love is free of need or change — it is an eternal mercy that nurtures, forgives, and sustains creation. Allah’s love is expressed through His guidance, forgiveness, and care for His servants, especially those who love and obey Him. To believe in Al-Wadud is to understand that Allah’s love is not merely emotional but active — manifested through forgiveness, provision, and acceptance — and that He invites His servants to reflect that same love in their hearts and actions.
Qur’anic References:
- Hud 11:90 – “Seek forgiveness from your Lord and turn to Him in repentance. Indeed, my Lord is Merciful and Loving.” — divine love flows to those who repent and return.
- Al-Buruj 85:14 – “And He is the Forgiving, the Loving.” — pairing love with forgiveness, revealing that His affection embraces even those who have erred but seek His mercy.
Notes:
- Al-Wadud appears two times, each paired with Al-Ghafur (The Forgiving), showing that divine love is inseparable from mercy and pardon.
- Wudd in Arabic signifies deep, enduring affection — not merely compassion but a love that seeks the good of the beloved.
- Hud (11:90) portrays Al-Wadud as welcoming the repentant, demonstrating that love is an open invitation, not a reward for perfection.
- Al-Buruj (85:14) reveals Allah’s love as active and infinite — He forgives not out of obligation but from deep affection for His creation.
- Classical scholars note that Al-Wadud expresses both giver and receiver of love — Allah loves His servants and instills in them the capacity to love Him and one another.
- To internalize Al-Wadud is to live with compassion, empathy, and sincerity — extending love that uplifts and forgives, reflecting a trace of divine affection in human form.
