The Light Verse

Reflection:

The Qur’an presents one of its most profound parables in describing Allah’s light as a source of divine guidance and inner illumination. The imagery of a niche containing a radiant lamp symbolizes faith glowing within the believer’s heart — protected, pure, and steady. This verse illustrates how divine truth enlightens minds and souls, guiding them through life’s darkness. It is both poetic and deeply theological, portraying Allah as the source of all clarity, wisdom, and spiritual perception.

Qur’anic Reference:

  • An-Nur 24:35 – “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp — the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a brilliant star — lit from a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills.”

Notes:

  • The lamp represents faith illuminated by revelation, shining through the believer’s heart.
  • The niche and glass suggest protection and purity, showing how divine light is preserved and magnified within sincere souls.
  • The “blessed olive tree” symbolizes universality — guidance available to all, transcending place and time.
  • The phrase “light upon light” expresses layered illumination — intellect guided by revelation, reason guided by spirit.
  • The verse reveals that true enlightenment comes not from intellect alone, but from divine guidance reflected through purity of heart.
