The Fly Challenge

Reflection:

This parable uses one of the smallest creatures — a fly — to reveal the utter powerlessness of false gods. The Qur’an challenges idolaters to produce even a single fly, or to reclaim what it takes, exposing the absurdity of worshiping beings with no creative power. The image is simple yet intellectually piercing: creation and control belong only to Allah. Through this humble example, the Qur’an dismantles arrogance and invites reflection on true dependence and divine supremacy.

Qur’anic Reference:

  • Al-Hajj 22:73 – “O mankind, a parable is presented: listen to it. Indeed, those you invoke besides Allah will never create [as much as] a fly, even if they gathered together for that purpose. And if the fly should take something from them, they could not recover it from him. Weak are the pursuer and pursued.”

Notes:

  • The fly symbolizes insignificant yet undefeatable creation, reminding that even the smallest of Allah’s creatures is beyond imitation.
  • The parable exposes false worship and human pride, proving that divinity cannot be ascribed to what is powerless.
  • The phrase “weak are the pursuer and pursued” mocks both idols and their worshipers — both dependent, both helpless.
  • This verse embodies the Qur’an’s method of using simplicity to convey profound truth: real power lies not in size or complexity, but in divine will alone.
