Names of Allah

Ash-Shakur (The Appreciative)

Reflection:

Ash-Shakūr (ٱلشَّكُور) means the One who abundantly rewards even the smallest of deeds and magnifies the efforts of His servants beyond measure. In human terms, shukr means gratitude; in divine terms, it means recognition and generous recompense. Allah, Ash-Shakur, acknowledges what His creation does out of sincerity — even the unnoticed, hidden act of goodness. To believe in this Name is to realize that no righteous effort is ever wasted and that divine gratitude teaches believers to be grateful, hopeful, and generous in return.

Qur’anic References:

  1. Al-Baqarah 2:158 – “Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah... Whoever volunteers good — Allah is Appreciative, All-Knowing.” — even voluntary acts are noticed and rewarded.
  2. Fatir 35:30 – Those who recite the Book, establish prayer, and spend from what Allah has given will be repaid fully; “Indeed, He is Forgiving, Appreciative.”
  3. Fatir 35:34 – The believers in Paradise say, “Praise be to Allah who has removed sorrow from us. Indeed, our Lord is Forgiving, Appreciative.”
  4. Ash-Shura 42:23 – “Whoever does good — We will increase him in good; indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Appreciative.” — a divine assurance that every act of faith is multiplied.

Notes:

  • Ash-Shakur appears about four times, often paired with Al-Ghafur (The Forgiving), revealing that Allah forgives shortcomings and amplifies good deeds.
  • Al-Baqarah (2:158) affirms that Ash-Shakur values even voluntary or small acts of worship.
  • Fatir (35) links divine appreciation with reward — Allah multiplies deeds, grants peace, and removes sorrow as gratitude for His servants’ sincerity.
  • Classical scholars describe Ash-Shakur as the One who rewards more than is deserved, contrasting with human limitation in gratitude.
  • To internalize Ash-Shakur is to live with thankfulness and generosity — recognizing blessings, using them for good, and appreciating others as Allah appreciates His servants.
