Concepts
Taqwa (God-consciousness)
General Definition:
Taqwa (التقوى) is the state of guarding oneself from sin through awareness of Allah. Classical scholars define it as placing a spiritual barrier between oneself and divine displeasure by obeying Allah’s commands and avoiding His prohibitions. It is both fear and mindfulness born of love — the essence of righteousness and the root of all virtue.
Qur’anic References:
-

Taqwa in Conduct and Character
- Al-Hujurat 49:13 – The most honored in Allah’s sight are those with the most taqwa, regardless of race or status.
- Al-Maidah 5:8 – Be steadfast in justice; do not let hatred cause injustice; be just — that is nearer to taqwa.
- Al-Baqarah 2:282 – Fear Allah in your dealings; Allah teaches and knows all things.
Notes:
- Al-Baqarah (2) identifies taqwa as the entry point to divine guidance.
- Al-Imran (3) and Al-Hashr (59) connect it to conscious preparation for the Hereafter.
- Al-Hujurat (49) universalizes taqwa as the true measure of human dignity.
- Classical scholars classify taqwa into three levels:
- Avoiding disbelief (kufr),
- Avoiding major and minor sins,
- Avoiding even doubtful matters for closeness to Allah.
- Taqwa is thus a living awareness of Allah that transforms knowledge into action, fear into discipline, and faith into moral excellence.
