Patience (Sabr)

General Definition:

Sabr (الصبر) means steadfastness, endurance, and self-restraint in obedience to Allah, avoidance of sin, and acceptance of His decree. Classical scholars describe sabr as “holding the soul firm upon what is right.” It is one of the highest virtues in Islam, encompassing patience in hardship, perseverance in worship, and composure in adversity.

  • Al-Asr (103) defines sabr as the foundation of moral and communal success.
  • Classical scholars divide sabr into three types:
    1. Patience in obedience (sabr ‘ala al-ta‘ah)
    2. Patience in avoiding sin (sabr ‘an al-ma‘siyah)
    3. Patience in facing destiny (sabr ‘ala al-qadar).
  • True sabr is not passive endurance but active trust and resilience, rooted in unwavering belief in Allah’s wisdom.
