The Torch Extinguished

Reflection:

The Qur’an likens hypocrites to people who light a torch for guidance but are quickly left in darkness when the flame dies out. They briefly experience the light of faith — understanding truth — yet lose it through disbelief or insincerity. This vivid parable captures the tragedy of those who know the truth but refuse to live by it, leaving themselves in confusion and moral blindness.

Qur’anic Reference:

  • Al-Baqarah 2:17–18 – “Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness, unable to see. Deaf, dumb, and blind — so they will not return.”

Notes:

  • The firelight symbolizes the initial spark of faith or awareness that hypocrisy quickly extinguishes.
  • The darkness represents spiritual blindness and loss of moral direction.
  • The parable reveals that knowledge without sincerity leads to greater confusion than ignorance itself.
  • The closing description — “deaf, dumb, and blind” — signifies complete spiritual paralysis, showing how hypocrisy destroys one’s inner light.
