The Water Cycle

Reflection:

The Qur’an speaks of rain not merely as a blessing but as part of a precise, repeating system of renewal — what we now know as the water cycle. Fourteen centuries ago, no one possessed the scientific understanding that water evaporates, forms clouds, precipitates, and is stored underground. The Qur’an’s description captures circulation, absorption, and revival — processes revealed in modern hydrology long after revelation. This shows not only divine knowledge of nature but also a call to reflect on the balance and mercy within creation.

Qur’anic References:

  1. Al-Mu’minun 23:18 – “And We sent down water from the sky in due measure, and We caused it to settle in the earth, and We are surely able to take it away.” — describing rainfall, groundwater storage, and regulation.
  2. Ar-Rum 30:48 – “It is Allah who sends the winds, and they stir the clouds, then He spreads them in the sky as He wills and breaks them apart, and you see the rain emerging from within them.” — outlining cloud formation and precipitation.

Notes:

  • These verses depict the complete hydrological process: wind-driven condensation, rainfall, absorption, and underground storage.
  • At the time of revelation, rain was seen as isolated weather, not part of a continuous global cycle of distribution and renewal.
  • The Qur’an emphasizes measure (bi-qadarin), showing that every droplet follows divine balance — linking science with spiritual reflection.
  • The deeper miracle lies not only in scientific foresight but in its spiritual insight: that water, the source of all life, is a sign of Allah’s mercy and precision.
