The Expanding Universe
Reflection:
The Qur’an describes the universe not as static but as expanding by divine power, a concept utterly beyond ancient cosmological views. For centuries, humanity believed the heavens were fixed — a dome or canopy over a stationary earth. Yet the Qur’an speaks of creation as a dynamic, ongoing act, where the heavens continue to widen. Modern astrophysics, through the discovery of galactic redshift and the Big Bang theory, confirms that the universe is indeed expanding. This verse thus reveals not only scientific foresight but a profound truth about divine creativity — ever active, ever unfolding.
Qur’anic Reference:
- Adh-Dhariyat 51:47 – “And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.”
Notes:
- The Arabic phrase “wa innā la-mūsi‘ūn” translates as “and We are surely expanding it,” indicating continuous, ongoing expansion, not a completed act.
- Ancient cosmologies viewed the universe as finite and motionless; the Qur’an alone described a living, growing cosmos.
- Modern evidence — such as Hubble’s discovery of galactic redshift (1929) — confirmed that space itself is stretching, aligning with the Qur’anic description.
- The verse’s emphasis on power (bi-quwwah) and expansion reflects both physical creation and divine majesty, linking cosmological truth with spiritual awe.
- The deeper miracle lies in how the Qur’an presents the universe as a continuing sign of Allah’s active will, where science and revelation converge in wonder.
