Deep-Sea Darkness

Reflection:

The Qur’an describes the layers of darkness in the depths of the sea, where waves rise upon waves and light cannot penetrate — a scene of precision unimaginable in the 7th century. The verse captures not only the physical structure of the ocean but also the inaccessibility and mystery of the deep, which modern oceanography confirms. Scientists now know that sunlight cannot reach beyond a few hundred meters, leaving the abyssal depths in complete darkness, with internal waves moving beneath the surface currents. The Qur’an’s vivid imagery reveals both scientific insight and spiritual symbolism: those far from divine light live as if submerged in an ocean of darkness.

Qur’anic Reference:

  1. An-Nur 24:40 – “Or [the deeds of the disbelievers] are like darknesses within a vast deep sea, covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds — darknesses, one above another. When one puts out his hand, he can hardly see it. And he for whom Allah has not granted light — for him there is no light.”

Notes:

  • The Qur’an’s reference to “waves upon waves” reflects modern understanding of subsurface currents and internal waves, discovered only with deep-sea exploration.
  • Light penetration in the ocean decreases with depth, leaving total darkness below approximately 1,000 meters — perfectly matching the Qur’anic description of “darkness upon darkness.”
  • In the 7th century, such depths were beyond human reach or visibility; this knowledge required advanced submersible technology centuries later.
  • The verse also carries profound spiritual metaphor — ignorance and disbelief are likened to physical darkness, while divine revelation is the only source of true illumination.
  • The miracle here lies in the union of scientific precision and moral meaning, portraying both the unseen depths of the sea and the unseen depths of the soul.
