Unity
General Definition:
Unity in Islam is expressed as al-Waḥdah (الوَحدة) and refers to holding together upon truth, obedience to Allah, and adherence to His guidance without division or sectarianism. Islamic unity is not mere social harmony, but unity upon correct belief, justice, and obedience to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. Classical scholars describe unity as “holding firmly together upon the truth and avoiding division that leads to weakness.”
Qur’anic References:
-
Unity Upon Faith and Obedience
- Al-Imran 3:103 – “And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you…”

- Al-An‘am 6:159 – Indeed, those who divide their religion and become sects—you are not associated with them in anything.
-
Unity as a Source of Strength and Victory
- Al-Anfal 8:46 – Obey Allah and His Messenger and do not dispute lest you lose courage and your strength depart.
- Al-Imran 3:105 – Do not be like those who became divided after clear proofs had come to them.
-
Brotherhood and Social Unity

- Ar-Rum 30:31–32 – Do not be among those who divided their religion and became sects, each party rejoicing in what it has.
Notes:
- Al-Imran (3:103) establishes unity as an obligation tied to Allah’s favor and guidance.
- Al-Anfal (8:46) links unity with strength, perseverance, and divine support, and division with weakness and failure.
- Al-Hujurat (49) grounds unity in brotherhood, reconciliation, and taqwā, not race or status.
- Islamic scholars distinguish between:
- Praiseworthy unity: unity upon the Qur’an and Sunnah
- Blameworthy unity: unity upon falsehood, innovation, or injustice
- True unity in Islam is unity upon truth, not unity at the expense of belief, justice, or obedience to Allah.
