Qadr (Divine Decree)
General Definition:
Qadr (القدر) refers to Allah’s predestination and divine measure of all things — that every event, outcome, and creation occurs by His knowledge, will, and wisdom. It is one of the six pillars of faith (iman bil-qadr), encompassing belief that Allah’s decree is absolute yet compatible with human free will and responsibility. Tawakkul (trust in Allah) is the believer’s contentment and reliance upon this decree after taking rightful means, reflecting perfect faith in Allah’s wisdom and mercy.

Notes:
- Al-Qamar (54) defines the metaphysical foundation of qadr: every event is precisely measured by Allah’s decree.
- At-Taghabun (64) and At-Tawbah (9) pair belief in decree with emotional peace, guiding the heart through trust.
- Al-Imran (3) demonstrates the balance of human action and divine reliance — one plans, strives, and then entrusts outcomes to Allah.
- Classical scholars describe qadr as comprising four levels: Allah’s knowledge (‘ilm), recording (kitābah), will (mashī’ah), and creation (khalq).
- Together, these verses teach that true faith in qadr cultivates contentment, patience, and serenity, recognizing that nothing occurs except by Allah’s perfect wisdom.
